Buyer’s Guide

Iron boxes have really come a long way from the original hot plate that was used in hard pressing clothes. Now, you have access to cordless irons that eliminate the boring and cumbersome nature of ironing. With cordless irons, there’s no excuse for going out with wrinkled clothes.

How Do Cordless Irons Operate?

If you’re new to the cordless iron technology, you might be asking yourself this question. Well, the answer is quite simple.

Essentially, a cordless iron is an iron box which doesn’t require a cord for operation. The cordless iron box comes as an iron and a charging base. The iron has an in-built rechargeable battery that charges via the charging base to produce enough heat for ironing. Heating water inside the water tank generates steam. To operate a cordless iron, you simply need to rest the iron on its charging plate with a connection to a power outlet.

Factors to Consider before Purchasing a Cordless Iron

The popularity of these cordless irons is attributed to the fact that they are more convenient, easy to maneuver and provide freedom of movement. They are also safer because they reduce the possibility of electrical shocks.

Purchasing a new appliance, especially when you are not well versed in the features and jargon, is always a risky business. If you’re confused on how to select the best cordless iron, one that is perfect for your needs and suits your preferences, don’t worry! We’ve also covered that for you in this buying guide. Here are some of the factors you need to pay attention to before selecting a cordless iron to add to your cart.

8 Best Cordless Irons -7

Steam Output

Steam is one of the critical components that make up the usefulness of a cordless iron. A high steam output shortens the time spent on ironing and ensures better wrinkle removal, making it a vital indication of an iron’s overall performance. So, you should check for the steam output emission when you compare different models.

Next, you need to determine if the cordless iron allows you to control the steam output according to what is suitable for the fabric you are ironing. You also have to consider the steam options that the iron provides. For instance, a gushing steam output in a continuous stream is needed for stubborn wrinkles. This stream bursts can be instrumental when you have to deal with thick fabric such as wool.

Meanwhile, the vertical steam option comes in handy for ironing hanging items like curtains and drapes.

What’s more, high-quality cordless irons like the eight reviewed above have vents which release steam while ironing. They go further to feature an anti-calcification design that prevents the buildup of sediments which can cause clogging of steam vents.

8-Best-Cordless-Irons-4

Soleplate

The soleplate is the undersection of the iron; the part of the iron that comes in contact with clothes during ironing. It has a flat surface needed to conduct the heat needed to press the cloth. Regardless of the model and type of the iron, a high-quality and long-lasting soleplate is very important. There are various types of soleplates, differing based on the material used in manufacturing it.

The most common materials are stainless steel and ceramic, and these are what you’ll find on the best cordless irons. Cordless irons with a ceramic soleplate like the Philips GC2080/28 Easyspeed Plus can generate and distribute heat efficiently. Plus, they have a non-stick function that stops clothes from sticking to the soleplate surface when you iron at a high temperature.

On the other hand, stainless steel models like the Panasonic 360˚ Freestyle NI-WL600 are also good conductors of heat, but their surfaces are cleaner, easier to maintain, and are also corrosion-resistant. They are very durable and allow for even distribution of heat.

Both the ceramic and stainless-steel soleplate models ensure that the iron glides smoothly over various types of fabrics. However, they can actually melt light-weighted materials like silk when you iron at a high temperature. This is where temperature control comes in.

8 Best Cordless Irons -1

Temperature Control

Another crucial factor you need to consider before selecting an iron is temperature control. By this, we mean the ability, precision, and ease with which you are able to control the soleplate’s temperatures during an ironing session. You have to consider the temperature settings; some of the high-quality cordless irons like the Decen Ultrapower Steam Iron have up to five different temperature settings, affording you the freedom to choose which best suits your fabric.

However, electronic temperature controls like what obtains in the Panasonic NI-WL600 Cordless Iron and the Sunbeam Versa Glide are the easiest to operate, and you can quickly adjust them to suit the heat requirements of the fabric you are ironing.

8 Best Cordless Irons -5

Ease of Use

By nature, cordless irons are more comfortable to use than the traditional irons. Unlike the regular irons, they are charged while in use by simply placing it on the charging base. You don’t have to bother about the worries associated with cord such as finding a charging port or plug.

However, some cordless irons are easier to use than others. Some come with an extremely user-friendly design and features that make ironing not only comfortable but also a fun experience. Take for instance the Panasonic 360˚ Freestyle iron that allows you to iron in whichever direction without having to reposition the iron or distort the cloth.

8 Best Cordless Irons -8

Water Reservoir Capacity

This is another aspect of an iron that you have to consider before purchasing. The water reservoir capacity refers to the water amount an iron can contain within its base unit. Ensure that you get an iron with a water tank capacity to suit your needs. The amount of water the tank can hold determines the period you can use the iron before you have to refill.

Ideally, an iron such as the Decen Ultrapower Steam Iron which has a large capacity is preferable to a reservoir with a lower capacity. Another thing to watch out for is a transparent water tank. This will help you to monitor the water level of the container while ironing so that you don’t run out of steam during ironing. You can find this in the Rowenta Freemove Cordless Iron which has a transparent water tank and a clearly marked out max line.

8-Best-Cordless-Irons-3

Portability

The weight of the iron determines its portability and contributes to the convenience of use. Ensure that you purchase a lightweight iron that you can carry about easily. If possible, you should test the iron in your hand before purchase to see if you can hold it comfortably.

Safety

Safety is always a top priority in irons. Most cordless irons (all the eight reviewed here) guarantee safety with an auto shut off feature that switches off the unit automatically if it is left idle for a specified period of time.

Warranty

The warranty on a product is a back-up; a statement from the manufacturer saying that the appliance is tested and trusted. Most of the best cordless irons on our list come with a one-year warranty except the Sunbeam Versa Glide that is sold with a three-year warranty from the manufacturer.

  1. Would you tell me about Rowenta DE5020 “Auto Off” function? How should I clean the soleplate of this iron?

    • This is a smart function for extra safety in case you accidentally left the iron unattended. The iron left on the base automatically switches off after 8 minutes. To restart the iron just re-connect it to its base.

You can use a damp cloth or sponge to clean a soleplate but make sure that the soleplate has cooled down. The manufacturer doesn’t recommend to use a detergent and suggests to use the Rowenta soleplate cleaning kit. Abrasive cleaning accessories are not recommended as well.

As a person who does a lot of ironing I pay attention to it. The iron works great! I just love eveything about it.

  4. I chose the Panasonic NI-WL600 out of your best list. My old iron has a cord that always tangles and accordingly wears out quite fast. For me it is much easier to iron without a cord. Panasonic NI-WL600 has to be placed in it’s charging base, rather than on the table upright, so that it can maintain the heat. But I got used to it very fast and now do it automatically. It has a fabulous and innovative design that makes it possible to iron with ease and speed. It is lightweight and easy to handle. Highly recommend this model!
